Associate Prof. Guoxing SUN from the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, University of Macau, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Concrete Technology (FICT). This title is one of the most authoritative academic honors in the global field of concrete technology, signifying that the recipient’s outstanding achievements in academic research and engineering practice have gained high recognition from the world’s top industrial and academic institutions.
The Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT) was founded in 1972 and merged with the Concrete Society in 2007, standing as one of the world’s most professional and authoritative top industry academic institutions in the field of concrete technology; FICT (Fellow of ICT), the highest membership honor established by ICT since 1987, is designed to recognize senior experts who have attained outstanding academic and engineering achievements and exerted profound industry influence across the global concrete technology sector, with fewer than 300 registered ICT Fellows worldwide at present and fewer than five newly elected fellows each year, among whom there are altogether 15 Chinese scholars including four Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (one foreign Academician included); the honor adopts extremely rigorous selection criteria, requiring applicants to possess over ten years of senior membership qualification, deliver remarkable industry contributions, and fulfill the requirement of ten consecutive years of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) records, with the title finally reviewed and awarded by the ICT Council; ICT Fellow, together with ACI Fellow (Fellow of the American Concrete Institute) and RILEM Fellow (Fellow of the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures), is hailed as one of the three most authoritative fellow titles in the global concrete industry with mutually recognized qualifications, and as a key professional credential for large-scale engineering consultancy, this title enjoys extremely high recognition in the concrete engineering sectors of Europe, America, Commonwealth countries, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Porf. Guoxing SUN joined the University of Macau in early 2017. He has long focused on the major national demands for research into high-performance concrete, conducting systematic research on the fundamental theories and key technologies for regulating concrete properties via nanotechnology. One of his patented inventions, cast-in-situ nano foam concrete, has been licensed by the University of Macau to an enterprise for commercial application and deployed in numerous major engineering projects, including the reconstruction and expansion of the Changjin section of the Shanghai–Kunming Expressway, the roof backfill of the Han River crossing tunnel on the Xiangyang East–West Axis, the Hengqin Port Integrated Transport Hub, the access road to the artificial island of the Macau Fourth Cross-Sea Bridge, the northern section tunnel of the Macau Light Rail East Line, the Friendship Roundabout vehicular overpass, public housing projects in Macau New Urban Area A, and interior construction works at The Venetian Macao. While enabling building weight reduction, energy conservation and enhanced structural safety, this technology has also saved tens of thousands of tons of cement and other construction materials.
Porf. Guoxing SUN has published 171 academic papers with over 8,300 total citations and an h-index of 46, and has successively led 28 research projects. He was awarded the National Excellent Youth Science Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) in 2021; in 2024, he received the First Prize of the Macao Science and Technology Award for Technological Invention, presented personally by Sam Hou Fai, the Chief Executive Designate of the Macao SAR. His research achievements and industrial transformation accomplishments have been reported by CCTV-1 Network News Broadcast, CCTV-4 and CCTV-13. The conferment of the FICT honorary title on Porf. Guoxing SUN not only represents international recognition of his long-term dedication and outstanding contributions to the field of concrete technology, but also highlights the growing global influence of Chinese scholars in the international academic and engineering communities of concrete technology.
