Title: AI-Powered Advanced Manufacturing: From Prediction to Optimization

Expert: Professor Han HUANG (Sun Yat-sen University )

Expert's Profile: Professor Han HUANG is the Chair Professor of Advanced Manufacturing, Dean of Engineering Faculty, and Head of School of Advanced Manufacturing at Sun Yat-sen University. He holds the title of Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland and serves as an Associate Editor for two top-tier international journals: International Journal of Mechanical Sciences & International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing. He has published more than 350 SCI-indexed journal papers with a Google h-index of 71. His main research interests include ultra-precision machining, additive manufacturing, robotic machining, and AI empowered intelligent manufacturing. He was awarded the Singapore National Technology Award for his pioneer work in developing robot-assisted grinding and polishing systems.

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming manufacturing by enabling the effective management of large and complex datasets, unlocking significant potential to enhance a wide range of machining processes. This talk reviews AI applications in advanced manufacturing, with a focus on key challenges and considerations that demand careful attention. It also presents our recent work on applying machine learning to analyze extensive datasets from precision grinding of brittle materials, demonstrating how AI can accurately predict process outcomes. Finally, case studies will highlight AI's potential in abrasive machining for process optimization, performance improvement, and tool wear monitoring.
