Abstract: Advances in cement and concrete materials are opening thedoor to new applications. Novel foamed materials can beused to make extremely lightweight building products andengineered materials for absorbing impact. One suchapplication is using foam in pavement systems for arrestingairplanes that overrun the taxiway. We have studiedmicrostructure of foamed materials using x-ray computedtomography and neww mechanical tests. We are usingadvanced computer models to capture the crushingbehavior of foams. Foams can be an attractive opportunityto use recycled waste products. Recycled materials areemphasized as part of sustainable construction practices, and we are learning how to use the fine particle fractionthat is usually discarded. The recycled fine particles can beused for controlled low strength materials. These advancesare examples of the many new opportunities for concretematerials that will open the door to new applications and
construction methods

Thanks to Prof. David A. Lange for the wonderful lecture!
