1) Recruitment Information

The research group of Associate Professor Sun Guoxing at the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME), University of Macau, is now recruiting PhD students for the 2026/2027 academic year (Awards and scholarships for doctoral students at the University of Macau). Bachelor’s degree holders from Double First-Class Universities or universities with First-Class Disciplines (that have obtained a discipline assessment grade of A or above) are eligible to apply, and for English proficiency requirements, please refer to the official website of the University of Macau. PhD students will be eligible for the University of Macau's "The UM Macao PhD Scholarship (MPDS)" (MOP 20,000 per month) or "PhD Student Financial Aid" (MOP 12,500 to 14,000 per month), based on their qualifications and academic achievements, for a period of 4 years.

2) Research Group Introduction

Guoxing SUN, Associate Professor at the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME), University of Macau, Director of the ZUMRI Advanced Materials R&D Center, leads over 30 scientific projects, including the National Excellent Young Scientist Fund, with a total funding of approximately 25 million MOP and 4.11 million CNY. He has supervised more than 50 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, among whom many doctoral graduates and postdoctoral researchers have been selected for talent programs such as Young Thousand Talents Program and the Science Fund Program for Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Overseas) and now hold professorships at renowned universities at home and abroad. He has published over 150 academic papers and filed 19 patents. His inventions have been applied in major projects such as the Fourth Macau Cross-Harbor Bridge, the Zhuhai-Macau Hengqin Port Integrated Transport Hub, and Xiangyang East-West Axis Road. These innovations have reduced cement raw material use by 15-40%, supporting China's "dual carbon" strategy and creating significant economic value. In 2024, he was awarded the 1st Prize of Science and Technology Awards Scheme (Technological Invention Award) in Macau (SAR),which marks the first time this first prize in the technological invention category has been conferred in Macau in the past five years. His work also has been featured on CCTV-1 News and CCTV-4. (Welcome to visit our research group website: http://www.um-composites.com/ for further information.)

Upon approval, students have access to the 270 m² on-campus laboratory and the 800 m² ZUMRI laboratory, as well as advanced large-scale equipment valued at over 120 million HKD. In addition to the laboratories, students are provided with personal workspaces, office, a tea room, and a lounge. The research group emphasizes research productivity and fosters a relaxed, collaborative environment. Students can freely choose research directions related to polymers, nanocomposites, or building materials based on their interests, or consult with their supervisor to select more suitable topics. The supervisor supports students' career development, offering the option to pursue either academic research or applied product development.
